For decades, zippers have been the standard closure system for suitcases. They are lightweight, familiar, and flexible enough to accommodate a little extra packing. But they are also one of the hardest-working components on a piece of luggage—and one of the first places travelers notice wear.
 A zipper may snag while packing, separate behind the slider, or pull away from the shell after a checked bag is compressed or handled roughly. Once the main zipper fails, the rest of the suitcase may still be perfectly usable, but the bag can no longer close securely. 

What Causes Luggage Zippers to Break?

A luggage zipper is more than a row of teeth. It includes the zipper track, fabric tape, slider, pull tabs, and stitching that connects the entire system to the suitcase.

1. Overpacking Creates Constant Tension

1. It Removes the Zipper Track Entirely
A zipperless suitcase has no teeth to separate, no slider to loosen, and no fabric zipper tape to tear away from the shell. Instead, the two halves of the suitcase meet along a rigid frame and are held together by mechanical latches.
2. The Frame Helps the Suitcase Hold Its Shape

What Zipperless Luggage Cannot Prevent Removing the zipper does not make a suitcase indestructible.
 A sufficiently strong impact can still scratch or crack a shell, damage a wheel, dent a frame, or affect latch alignment. No luggage design can guarantee complete protection against every form of airline handling, theft, or accidental damage.
Zipperless luggage also has a few practical limitations:
• The reinforced frame may add weight.
• Most models do not offer expandable capacity.
• Both sides must be aligned before the latches can close.
• Travelers who habitually overpack may need to change how they pack.
